Please join us if you can for the first Apiary Day of the season. At the Association apiary at Plas Tan y Bwlch, 2pm, Saturday 30th April. Meet in the lower car park.
We have six colonies at the apiary and will be looking at all of them. Most have been taking advantage of the recent fine weather and are well advanced for the time of year.
Our plans for Saturday include: doing a Shook Swarm on one colony which has very dirty old combs and we want to change the hive type;splitting a very strong colony before it prepares to swarm in order to produce some nuclei;checking the varroa drop from all colonies and applying a formic acid treatment if any colonies need it.
Attached is an article about the Shook Swarm technique which Paul wrote for another Association a couple of years ago. Have a look at it and if you think it’s something you might like to try on one of your own colonies then join that group on Saturday for a demonstration.
